With the 2026 World Cup set to begin on Thursday (11 June), anticipation is reaching fever pitch among football fans around the globe.
Alongside the excitement surrounding the tournament itself, another topic has been generating plenty of discussion: calls for a World Cup bank holiday after King Charles III approved a highly unusual proposal.
Scotland Granted a Special Bank Holiday
Next Monday (15 June) has officially been declared a national bank holiday in Scotland to commemorate the countryโs participation in the menโs FIFA World Cup finals.
Scotland will begin its Group C campaign against Haiti at Gillette Stadium near Boston, Massachusetts.
Although the match is scheduled for a 9 pm local kick-off in the United States, supporters back home in Scotland will need to stay up until 2 am on Sunday (14 June) to watch the game live.
According to an official statement released by the Scottish Government, Monday 15 June 2026 has now been formally designated as a national holiday to celebrate Scotlandโs return to the World Cup.
โThe holiday was proposed by First Minister John Swinney to allow people, businesses and other organisations in Scotland to celebrate after the teamโs opening game against Haiti,โ the announcement explained.
King Charles Approves Historic Proposal
The statement also confirmed that King Charles approved the Royal Proclamation authorizing the bank holiday.
The occasion marks a significant milestone for Scottish football, as it will be the first time the menโs national team has competed at the World Cup since 1998.
Speaking about the decision, Scotlandโs First Minister John Swinney said: โScotland will be on the world stage this summer, and I want as many people as possible to be able to celebrate that moment. Football means a great deal to many people in this country, and it has been almost three decades since our menโs national team played at the World Cup finals tournament.
โThe joyous reaction when Steve Clarke and his players secured qualification demonstrated what it meant to end that long absence.โ
He continued: โWe want to make the most of Scotlandโs participation in this global sporting event by ensuring people have the opportunity to come together and celebrate โ no matter the outcome of the match. That is why I proposed making the Monday following our opening game in Boston a national bank holiday.
โI am very grateful to His Majesty King Charles for approving the proposal, and I encourage employers around the country to work with staff to put in place suitable arrangements that will allow as many of them as possible to join in the celebrations.โ

News of the special holiday quickly spread online, prompting football fans elsewhere in the UK to ask why the same arrangement was not being offered to other home nations.
