Andy Rowell stepped onto the America’s Got Talent stage in 2019 during Season 14 with an act that was unlike anything the show had seen before. A comedian and karaoke performer, he would soon earn the unforgettable nickname “The Tequila Guy” thanks to a performance that relied on timing, confidence, and a single repeated word.
For his audition, Rowell chose The Champs’ classic hit “Tequila,” but with an unexpected twist. As the instrumental track played, he stood silently on stage, saying nothing for most of the song. Only at the exact moments when the lyrics were supposed to appear did he shout one word—“Tequila!”—perfectly in sync with the music.
The simplicity of the act turned out to be its greatest strength. The audience quickly caught on, erupting in laughter and applause, while the judges—Howie Mandel, Gabrielle Union, Julianne Hough, and Simon Cowell—clearly enjoyed the originality of the performance.
All four judges voted “yes,” sending Rowell through to the next round of the competition. He proved that sometimes, even a single word can be enough to make a lasting impression.
