That night, I sat on the tiny motel bed, holding my sleeping daughter while my son curled beside me under a thin blanket. My motherโs boyfriend, Daniel, stood near the door with red eyes and trembling hands.
โI need to tell you something,โ he whispered.
I stared at him coldly. โWhatever it is, it doesnโt matter anymore.โ
He swallowed hard. โYour mother never wanted to turn you away.โ
My chest tightened.
โShe begged me to let you stay. We argued for hours.โ His voice cracked. โBut the truth isโฆ she was very sick.โ
I frowned. โWhat?โ
โShe found out she had an aggressive heart condition months earlier. The doctors said stress could kill her. She was terrified that if you and the kids moved in, she wouldnโt be strong enough to help you the way she wanted.โ
I shook my head in disbelief. โShe couldโve told me.โ
โShe wanted to,โ Daniel said. โBut she was ashamed. She thought youโd see her as weak.โ
Tears burned my eyes for the first time since her death.
Then he handed me a small envelope.
โShe left this for you.โ
My fingers trembled as I opened it.
Inside was a letter in my motherโs handwriting.
My sweet girl,
If youโre reading this, then Iโm gone. Please forgive me. Saying no to you was the hardest thing Iโve ever done. I wanted to protect you from watching me die slowly. I thought youโd hate me less this way.
I sold my jewelry and put money aside for you and the children. Daniel knows where it is. Use it to start over. And never doubt this: I loved you every single day of my life.
By the end of the letter, I was sobbing.
Daniel quietly placed a small key on the table.
โShe rented a storage unit,โ he said. โThereโs enough there to help you get back on your feet.โ
A week later, I opened that storage unit and found old family photos, baby clothes she had saved for my kidsโฆ and a locked box containing nearly twenty thousand dollars.
My mother had been preparing to save me, even while she was dying.
For the first time in months, I felt something other than pain.
