SWITCHING PARTIES’ – House Minority Leader Hakeem Jeffries Reacts to Wild News That Texas Rep. Cuellar Files for Re-Electio …

WASHINGTON D.C.ย โ€” In one of the wildest political plot twists of the year, Texas Representative Henry Cuellar (D-TX) officially filed for re-election on Wednesday as a Democrat, firmly shutting down rampant speculation that he was preparing to switch parties or retire after receiving a completely unexpected pardon from President Donald Trump.

The surprise clemency effectively wiped away more than a dozen serious corruption and bribery charges against Cuellar and his wife, Imelda, completely clearing the runway for the longtime congressman to defend his highly competitive Rio Grande Valley seat.

“NOTHING HAS CHANGED”

President Trump’s sudden announcement instantly sparked a firestorm of speculation in Washington.ย Many political insiders assumed the pardon was the culmination of years of GOP recruitment efforts and that Cuellar would finally cross the aisleโ€”a shift that would have handed Republicans a massive advantage in the 2026 midterms.

Cuellar, however, quickly put an end to the rumors.ย He assured senior Democratic leadership in private conversations that he wasn’t going anywhere and promptly filed his reelection paperwork with Texas officials.

โ€œIt came as a surprise,โ€ Cuellar told a small group of reporters regarding the pardon. โ€œI want to thank President Trump for this. โ€ฆ Now we clear the air. Nothing has changed, and weโ€™re going to be ready to win re-election again… Iโ€™m a good old conservative Democrat.โ€

THE WEAPONIZATION DEBATE

Trump announced the massive pardon via Truth Social, directly attributing Cuellar’s prosecution by the Justice Department to the congressman’s vocal criticism of former President Joe Biden’s open-border immigration policies.

“Henry, I donโ€™t know you, but you can sleep well tonight โ€” Your nightmare is finally over!” Trump posted.

By pardoning a sitting Democrat, Trump has heavily reinforced his longstanding argument that the “weaponization” of law enforcement isn’t just a partisan issueโ€”it is a systemic problem that affects politicians across the aisle who dare to step out of line.

While the pardon proves Trump’s point, it also severely complicates the Republican Party’s strategy.ย Cuellar has remained near the very top of the GOPโ€™s 2026 target list for years. Rep. Pete Sessions (R-TX) noted that Cuellar’s immediate decision to run again as a Democrat proves โ€œthere was not a quid pro quoโ€ attached to the President’s clemency, adding, โ€œVery interesting. Very interesting.โ€

HAKEEM JEFFRIES BACKS THE PARDON

Perhaps the most shocking reaction to the entire ordeal came from House Minority Leader Hakeem Jeffries (D-NY).ย Jeffries, who has frequently criticized Trump’s other pardons, took to CNN to completely back the President’s decision, heavily questioning the legitimacy of the original charges brought against his colleague.

โ€œListen, the reality is [that] this indictment was very thin to begin with, in my view,โ€ Jeffries told CNN. โ€œThe charges were eventually going to be dismissed โ€” if not at the trial court level [then] by the Supreme Court, as theyโ€™ve repeatedly done in instances just like this.โ€

Jeffries added, “I donโ€™t know why the president decided to do this, [but] I think the outcome was exactly the right outcome.”

While Cuellar confirmed he received no advance notice of the pardon and has not yet spoken to Trump directly, the Texas Democrat revealed he fully plans to attend the upcoming White House Christmas party so he can thank the President personally.

With the legal noise gone and the Democratic establishment firmly behind him, Cuellar is projecting absolute confidence heading into 2026.ย “This is a conservative district,” Cuellar stated, “and I will win it.”
