WASHINGTON, D.C. — President Trump made it crystal clear Friday night: Voter ID is coming — with or without Congress.

In a blunt announcement, Trump said he will pursue an executive order to enforce strict voter identification requirements nationwide, pledging the policy will be in place for the 2026 midterms regardless of what happens to the SAVE America Act on Capitol Hill.

The Senate Logjam: Collins Joins the Fray

The SAVE America Act recently picked up a meaningful boost when Senator Susan Collins (R-ME) signaled her support — bringing the total to 50 votes. While this creates a 50+1 scenario with Vice President JD Vance available for a tiebreaker, the bill remains blocked by the 60-vote filibuster. Trump, seemingly tired of the wait, is taking the fight directly to the executive level.

“The Democrats refuse to vote for Voter I.D., or Citizenship. The reason is very simple — They want to continue to cheat in Elections,” Trump wrote on Truth Social. “This was not what our Founders desired.”

Voter ID: The “Mainstream” Mandate

Despite arguments from Democratic leaders that stricter ID requirements burden minority voters, current data paints a different picture. According to a Pew Research survey, 83% of Americans support requiring a government-issued photo ID to vote. This includes 71% of Democrats.

CNN data reporter Harry Enten recently admitted: “Voter ID is NOT controversial in this country… It is not controversial by party, and it is not controversial by race.”

The Legal Showdown

Trump acknowledged that his order will trigger a “legal firestorm.” Federal judges have previously blocked portions of his election-related executive orders, ruling that the Constitution gives power over election rules to the states and Congress. However, Trump teased an “irrefutable” legal argument based on emergency powers and national security that he plans to present to the Supreme Court shortly.

Court Packing: Expanding the Supreme Court to 21 Justices.
